The New York Times was first to report the email exchanges Gruden had with former Washington Football Team executive Bruce Allen that contained inappropriate comments about other coaches, players and women.
The email exchanges were found as part of an NFL investigation on the Washington Football Team on workplace misconduct.
Out of the 650,000 emails that were investigated, they found Gruden using anti-gay slurs towards NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Rams coach Jeff Fisher for drafting Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted in the NFL.
According to the report, Gruden also made comments on the NFL hiring women as referees, which he did not agree with, all while he was sharing topless photos of women to Allen. This included one cheerleader from the Washington Football Team.
Gruden didn’t stop there as he also made several racist comments towards players in the league, after claiming he didn’t have “a blade of racism” in him.
The report first came out last week but didn’t gain much traction until today when the Raiders owner Mark Davis arrived at the team’s facility where the two men met. Shortly after Gruden was later out as head coach.
“I have resigned as Head Coach of the Las Vegas Raiders,” Gruden stated. “I love the Raiders and do not want to be a distraction. Thank you to all the players, coaches, staff, and the fans of Raider Nation. I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone.”
Raiders assistant head coach Rich Bisaccia will take over head coaching for the Raiders after Gruden’s departure, first reported by Adam Schefter.
