After two straight overtime losses, the Runnin’ Rebels were due for some better luck.
The Bruins had other ideas.
UNLV fell to UCLA 71-54 in a contest that was never really close. Junior guard Chris Smith led the Bruins 16 points and 8 rebounds, and redshirt freshman Tyger Campbell had 15.
Forward Donnie Tillman gave UNLV 18 points and seven rebounds in 35 minutes, and looked like coach T.J. Otzelberger’s go-to option when the game looked close in the second half.
Amauri Hardy and Elijah Long had 13 points each, and sophomore guard Bryce Hamilton had 10 points in 27 minutes.
The problem? No other Runnin’ Rebel scored. Those four accounted for all of the points UNLV scored.
UNLV shot 39% from the field and 30% from three point land. And none of those shots wanted to fall in the second half, when they really needed it.
The first half was almost all Bruins, until UNLV rallied to end the half on a 7-0 run. The Rebels managed to tread water in the second half and leave hope for a comeback, but the shots just wouldn’t fall.
It was that kind of night.
Junior guard Jonah Antonio was scoreless in 11 minutes, all in the first half. He did not play in the second half.
UNLV returns to Thomas & Mack Center on November 18th against Abilene Christian University.
